WORKSHOP // Tablet Weaving: Traditional Woven Belts & Bands
How does it sound? What is a sound? Or what are weaving tablets? A tablet-woven belt sounds great!
What is weaving with strings?
Weaving with strings is a historical technique in which warp threads are multiplied together, creating a stronger than average fabric structure. For this, boards with holes, or strings, are used, which both multiply the warp and create a spacer.
Weaving with strings originates from ancient Egypt, but was most common in Europe in the early Middle Ages. Since weaving with strings produces a strong but thick textile, this technique is used to make belts and decorative ribbons. In Estonia, strings were made both as belts in ancient times and as decorations for folk costumes.
The workshop begins with an introduction, choosing patterns/yarns, and applying strings. It takes a total of 3-4 hours, after which we will cook together. The last hours of the workshop can be woven and told on site. If the string was not finished or you want to finish it in company, you can come to the sewing workshops of Paranduskelder on Tuesdays to finish it! There are tools and a selection of yarns on site, but if you have a specific idea, we recommend bringing your own yarn.
Come and try how it's done in a cozy and peaceful atmosphere!
