WORKSHOP // Children’s Demolition Saturday

Come and dismantle electronics with us!

If electrical devices are broken or simply outdated, it doesn’t actually mean they need to be thrown away whole. If the device itself can no longer be repaired, many of the parts inside it can be reused. For example, inside an old computer’s CD drive there’s a tiny motor that you can connect to a battery and use to build a toy car.

What makes dismantling electronics so exciting is that there are a huge number of odd bits and pieces inside the machine. For example, a standard home printer may contain 300–500 different parts, large and small; an office printer might even have 1,000! There are screws, bits of plastic, wires… and every part has its own specific function. Taking machines apart using various tools is part of everyday life for electronics repairers.
Now, even novice repairers can get involved!

During the workshop, children will learn how to use tools, how to safely take devices apart, and how to sort different materials. We’ll talk about recycling and new ways to use the parts we’ve removed. We’ll learn how to take electronic devices apart whilst keeping the parts we’re interested in intact. This is a useful skill for any budding repairer. We’ll sort through the bits and bobs collected during the dismantling day that are needed for the Repair Cellar, so they’re ready to be put to good use in future repair projects. You can even take some of the more interesting bits home with you ;)

The workshop is designed for children aged 6–99. Children aged 9 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The event will continue until all the machines have been smashed up or until the last participant runs out of steam. After the event, we’ll return the children in one piece – the machines won’t be so lucky!
